Why Some People Don't Become Victims: A look at workplace safety and the decisions we can make to keep us safe.

Jerry McCormick has over 25 years of research in Human behaviors - over that time he has studied more than 327 active shooter cases and trained over 40,000 first responders in North Carolina, and shares his research findings with other police agencies, colleges and universities in the US, Europe, & China.   As his research progressed, he became fascinated by a different question: Why are police officers so rarely, if ever victims of violent crime while away from work with their families or friends? To answer that question, he interviewed more than 11,380 police officers around the world and analyzed the common behaviors, attitudes, and decision-making processes that help them recognize danger early and reduce their risk.

That research became the foundation for his book, Why Some People Don't Become Victims: What 10,000 Police Officers Reveal About Workplace Violence and Practical Prevention.

In this presentation, Jerry will translate those lessons into practical strategies that anyone can use. Whether you work in an office, a manufacturing facility, a healthcare setting, a school, a house of worship, or volunteer in your community, the principles are the same.  Rather than focusing on fear or worst-case scenarios, this keynote is designed to empower people. You'll learn how to recognize warning signs, identify unsafe conditions, and take practical, evidence-based steps that reduce risk before violence occurs. The goal is not to convince people that a violent event is likely—it is to give them the confidence, awareness, and tools to make their workplace and community safer through everyday actions.
